About This Service
When a crown is broken through, undersized, or was originally just a slope of mortar (a 'mortar wash' — common, and never adequate), replacement is the fix: forming and pouring a genuine reinforced concrete crown with proper thickness, overhang, and drip edge.
A correct crown is engineered, not troweled: minimum two-inch thickness, expansion gap around the flue tiles, a two-inch overhang past the brick, and a drip kerf underneath so water falls clear of the masonry instead of running down its face. Most original crowns we replace had none of these.
Signs You Need Chimney Crown Replacement
- Crown crumbling or broken into sections
- A thin mortar-wash top instead of a real concrete crown
- Repeated crown patch jobs that keep failing
- Upper masonry courses deteriorating from crown runoff

Our Crown Work, Step by Step
We inspect the crown, flue tiles, and upper courses to map all damage, not just the visible crack.
Failed material is cut out; sound concrete gets cleaned and primed.
Repair coat or full re-form and pour — with overhang, drip edge, and flue expansion gap.
Cured work is sealed, and cap fit is verified before we come down.
Why It Matters for Safety
The crown is the gatekeeper for the entire chimney: once water passes it, freeze-thaw attacks the structure from inside and no downstream repair fully compensates. Crown integrity is the cheapest point in the whole system to stop water — and the most expensive place to have ignored it.
Maintenance Tips From Our Technicians
- Look at the crown (binoculars work) each spring after freeze season.
- Keep crown surfaces clear of debris and standing water.
- Hairline cracks are a this-season repair, not a someday one.
- Pair crown checks with cap checks — they fail together and protect each other.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my original crown fail so quickly?
Most builder-installed crowns are simply mortar sloped over the top brick — a material never meant for horizontal weather exposure. A real cast crown with reinforcement and drip edge is a different product entirely.
How long does a new crown last?
A properly cast and cured crown, protected with breathable sealer, should outlast most roofs — 30 to 50 years is realistic even in Colorado's freeze-thaw climate.
How soon can you come out?
Routine appointments are usually available within the week, and our 24/7 emergency line handles the situations that can't wait. October and November book fastest — spring and summer scheduling is easiest.
